Template editor overview

Updated June 18, 2026

The template editor is where you build and modify the structure of your inspection templates. It is a separate tool from the report editor — you use the template editor to design the form, and the report editor to fill it out for a specific inspection.

Opening the template editor

  1. Go to Templates in the left navigation.

  2. Click the template you want to edit, or click New Template to start fresh.

  3. Click Edit Template (or you land in the editor directly for a new template).

The editor layout

The editor has two main areas:

  • Left panel — structure tree. A hierarchical list of everything in the template: sections, groups, items, questions, deficiencies, and narratives. Click any item in the tree to select it and edit it in the main panel.

  • Right panel — content editor. The detail view for the currently selected item. This is where you edit names, questions, answer options, and other properties.

Navigation

Click any item in the structure tree to open it for editing. Use the expand/collapse arrows to navigate nested content. Drag items to reorder them within their level.

Adding items

Use the + Add buttons that appear at each level in the structure tree:

  • + Add Section to add a top-level section.

  • + Add Group to add a group inside a section.

  • + Add Item to add an item inside a group.

  • + Add Question / Deficiency / Narrative to add content inside an item.

Editing an item

Click the item in the tree. Its properties appear in the right panel. Edit the name, description, or other settings and the change saves automatically (or click Save if prompted).

Reordering

Drag items in the structure tree to change their order. Sections, groups, and items can all be reordered by dragging. The new order is reflected immediately in the report when the template is used.

Duplicating items

Right-click an item in the tree (or use the options menu) and select Duplicate to create a copy. This is useful when multiple similar items are needed — build one, duplicate it, and edit the copy.

Saving and publishing the template

Template changes save automatically as you work. When you are done, you can publish the template to make it available for creating reports. Draft templates are visible in the template editor but cannot be selected when starting a new report.
