Sections, systems, and rooms

Understanding the structure of a report helps you navigate the editor and know where to record what you observe. Inspector Studio reports are organized into sections, and within sections, systems and rooms.

Sections

A section is a top-level category in the report. Examples include:

• Electrical

• Plumbing

• Heating & Cooling

• Roofing

• Bathrooms

• Bedrooms

Sections appear in the left sidebar of the report editor and define the major areas of the inspection. The sections available in your report come from the template the report was created from.

Systems

A system is a specific piece of equipment or component within a section. Systems live inside a section and let you evaluate each piece of equipment individually.

For example, under the Heating & Cooling section, you might have:

• AC Unit 1 (Split System)

• Water Heater (Gas, 40 gallon)

• Furnace (Gas Forced Air)

Each system gets its own set of questions, deficiency notes, and photos. This keeps the findings for each piece of equipment neatly separated.

To add a system: open the section in the editor and click Add System. Choose the system type (for example, "Split System Air Conditioner") or type a custom name.

Rooms

Rooms work the same way as systems but are used for spaces rather than equipment. Under a Bedrooms section you might have:

• Master Bedroom

• Bedroom 2

• Bedroom 3

Each room gets its own inspection items. To add a room: open the section in the editor and click Add Room.

Items inside systems and rooms

Once you have a system or room, you will see the items (questions, narratives, deficiency fields) that belong to it. These come from the template and define what you are supposed to evaluate and record for that type of system or room.

Why this structure matters

The separation into sections, systems, and rooms is what makes a report scannable and useful. When a customer reads the report, they can find everything about a specific piece of equipment or room in one place, rather than having all findings jumbled together. It also makes deficiency summaries cleaner — the report can list "Roof — Missing flashing at chimney" and "Electrical — Double-tapped breakers" separately.

Important: A system is not the same as a section. The water heater is a system that lives inside the Plumbing section — it is not a section of its own.
